The Festival Hub


In partnership with Festival Place we are thrilled to announce something completely new to this years Basingstoke Festival – The Festival Hub, in Festival Place (unit next to Typo, oposite Monsoon)

Head to The Festival Hub across the three weekends between 11am to 4pm to enjoy a takeover weekend including live music, artist workshops, film and a pop-up cinema.

Weekend two

A hub of creativity with local artists from THAT Gallery. Take part in ‘make your mark’ drop in workshops, learn a new technique, see demonstrations and live painting, join Q&A sessions led by local artists.


Saturday 1st July

11am to 4pm – “Make a Mark” with mixed media artist Jacky Purtill
Come and learn about the technique of sgraffito. Jacky will support in making 2D artwork and greeting cards to take away and gift to family and friends.

11am to 1pm –  “Every Child Is An Artist” with artist Rachel Davis
Taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso. Come and learn a new way of looking at faces. You will be helped to make a paper plate portrait or piece of flat work to takeaway.

1pm to 3pm – Signed story time “We are going on a bear hunt” and “Colour Monster” with early years practioner and level 3 BSL signer Gosia Wiezorek
This is an inclusive family story session for everyone to enjoy and will be signed throughout by THAT Gallery helper Gosia. This is welcome to all families with hearing impaired children.

Flourish sketchbook challenge
We will be giving away 50 pocket sized sketchbooks for a daily draw challenge. Each sketchbook will be filled with a daily word prompt sheet that will help you create a spark for the drawing. Aimed at aged 16+ , non pro artists.

Kids flourish plant pot challenge
We will be giving away 50 plant pots and seeds. Children are encouraged to decorate them and nurture their seeds.

Community collaborative canvas
Join THAT Gallery to create an amazing piece together! All skills welcome.

All Day

There will be a free flowing colouring and drawing table.

Sunday 2nd July

11am to 1pm “Make your mark” drop in workshop with Jacky Purtill
Metal embossing exploration and opportunity to create your own gift card and flat artwork to takeaway.

11am to 1pm –  “Experimental Mark Making” drop in workshop with Rachel Davis
Looking at how we can use unusual or found objects to enrich our mark making.

11am to 1pm –  “Free portraits offered by Fatima Pantoja”
Sit to have your portrait done for FREE by THAT Gallery’s very own Sky Portrait Artist of the Year semi-finalist.

12noon to 12.30pm-  “Music from Thomas Barfoot”

1pm to 1.30pm-  “Music from Thomas Barfoot”

1.30pm to 2.30pm – Live painting plus Q&A with expressive wildlife artist David Thomas
Watch David paint a beautiful kingfisher. Ask him about his techniques, what colours he uses and any top secret tips….

2.30pm to 4pm – Live painting plus Q&A with pop art painter Martyn Kee
Watch Martyn work throughout his process and how he transfers faces to the canvas.
