Mrs Darcy's Dressmaker

Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 July

The year is 1837 and Mr and Mrs Darcy are busy planning the wedding of a beloved daughter. Join Mrs Darcy’s dressmaker as she stitches the gowns for this great occasion, and shares snippets of gossip picked up from fitting to fitting. Scandal loves an audience, and the antics of the Darcy family’s wider circle provide more than enough delicious fuel for this 40-minute one-woman play written by Sue Washington. The play will be followed by a 30-minute talk, Keeping Jane. Textile Conservator Sarah Howard will share her experience of conserving two surviving textiles reputedly worn and made by Jane Austen; a silk pelisse coat and a cotton patchwork coverlet. This event is part of Whitchurch Silk Mill’s ‘Undressing Austen’ season. Guests may view the mill’s Sitting with Jane bench, part of Destination Basingstoke’s public art trail.

Admission Price:
£12 adults, £10 children and concessions
